Kansas-based mobile decoy company gets bowhunters close to action – Sports – The Leavenworth Times – Leavenworth, KS

Heads Up Decoy, based out of Hays, offers a variety of light-weight, portable decoys that are known for bringing deer, elk, moose and turkeys in close thanks to their photo-realistic cloth bodies, which are draped over support frames to keep the correct shape. These unique decoys can attach to a hunter’s bow, a tree or even be stood up in a cornfield or held by a fellow hunter. “We underestimated their effectiveness early on and then we started pushing the envelope as far as how to use them,” said Garrett Roe, owner of Heads Up Decoy, during last month’s Kansas Monster Buck Classic in Topeka. “We just came up with new bowhunting tactics that are unique to our product. We’ve been doing it since 2008, so we’ve had a lot of water under the bridge, lot of experience and a lot of fun with them, actually.” Among the company’s featured products are decoys for antelope, whitetail bucks and does, mule bucks and does, elk, moose and turkeys, as well as ground stakes, handles, mounts, apparel and turkey calls made by Phelps. There is also a deer grunt call available from Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls and Supplies on the company’s website, https://www.head...

Q: I’ll be remodeling my guest bathroom soon. What’s the best towel bar height? Does the same height apply to towel rings?  A: With all the details that go into a bathroom remodel, towel bar and ring height can often fall by the wayside. But where the bar lies on the wall dictates the speed and ease of your daily dry-off sessions and the cleanliness of your towels, so you’re smart to consider it now. The last thing you want is a too-low bar that lets towels drag on the floor and pick up bacteria or one that’s so high it makes removing and replacing towels challenging. While there is an industry standard height that contractors tend to use, the best height depends on the bathroom layout and who will be using it. For example, if the bathroom is part of a mother-in-law suite, you may want to plan for aging in place by making it accessible for folks with limited mobility. Ahead, tips on optimizing the placement of towel bars and rings for utmost comfort and convenience. This is to say that the center of the two mounts on either side of the bar (which are level with the bar itself) should sit at a height of 48 inches above the floor. This is considered the industry standard, whether ...

CORSAIR has a brand new CPU cooler on the market, and while this is a common

CORSAIR has a brand new CPU cooler on the market, and while this is a common occurrence from the prolific manufacturer that has become synonymous with all-in-one liquid coolers, the twist is that this is not a liquid cooler. Yes, CORSAIR has resurrected the air lineup we last saw a decade ago with Air Series A70, and they decided to go big or go home. The A500 Dual Fan CPU Cooler is comprised of a large single-tower heatsink (though closer to a small dual-tower under the hood) combining copper heatpipes and aluminum fins, bookended by two 120 mm fans that – surprisingly – don’t offer any RGB lighting effects. It’s 3.2 lbs of cooling power in a slick, premium package – and with a $99 price tag to match. This A500 also offers a unique feature, with a ratcheting system to raise or lower the fans to accommodate different memory heights. My ears perked up immediately when I heard about this, and anything that makes the fan installation/adjustment process easier is a welcome innovation to someone who spends an inordinate amount of time swapping CPUs. The A500 cooler offers a clean, symmetrical appearance, and from a functional standpoint there is the large heatsink and four direct-co...

Deep-Sea Mining and the Race to the Bottom of the Ocean

Unless you are given to chronic anxiety or suffer from nihilistic despair, you probably haven’t spent much time contemplating the bottom of the ocean. Many people imagine the seabed to be a vast expanse of sand, but it’s a jagged and dynamic landscape with as much variation as any place onshore. Mountains surge from underwater plains, canyons slice miles deep, hot springs billow through fissures in rock, and streams of heavy brine ooze down hillsides, pooling into undersea lakes. These peaks and valleys are laced with most of the same minerals found on land. Scientists have documented their deposits since at least 1868, when a dredging ship pulled a chunk of iron ore from the seabed north of Russia. Five years later, another ship found similar nuggets at the bottom of the Atlantic, and two years after that, it discovered a field of the same objects in the Pacific. For more than a century, oceanographers continued to identify new minerals on the seafloor—copper, nickel, silver, platinum, gold, and even gemstones—while mining companies searched for a practical way to dig them up. Today, many of the largest mineral corporations in the world have launched underwater mining programs....

If there’s a time when your plastic use hits an all-time high, it’s during your weekly

If there’s a time when your plastic use hits an all-time high, it’s during your weekly trip to the grocery store. While some things are unavoidable — the plastic packing on salad mix, for example — there are a number of simple changes you can make for a more eco-friendly shopping experience. First things first: Trade the plastic bags that most stores provide for your own reusable grocery bags. There are so many options to consider, including machine-washable totes, foldable bags, canvas carry-alls, or patterned polypropylene bags that match your style. Once you find one that best fits your needs, stash it in your purse, glove box, or trunk, so you have no excuses but to go green. And since we know it can be tough to change your ways, think about it this way: Eight states, including Connecticut, California, and New York, have already banned single-use plastic bags, so you might as well get a hang of using reusable bags. While you can always buy a reusable bag the next time you’re at the grocery store or even use a rogue shopping bag you have lying around the house (FYI, Lululemon and Fresh Direct bags are great makeshift grocery bags), we’ve rounded up a l...

The Tax Foundation is the nation’s leading independent tax policy nonprofit. Since 1937, our principled research, insightful analysis, and engaged experts have informed smarter tax policy at the federal, state, and global levels. For over 80 years, our goal has remained the same: to improve lives through tax policies that lead to greater economic growth and opportunity. Sixteen states will hold a sales tax holiday in 2019, down from a peak of 19 in 2010 and from 17 last year. Wisconsin did not continue its one-time holiday, and Louisiana suspended its sales tax holiday program effective July 1, 2018. Massachusetts had established a one-time sales tax holiday for 2018, but starting this year reinstated it as an annual holiday. Sales tax holidays do not promote economic growth or significantly increase consumer purchases; the evidence (including a 2017 study by Federal Reserve researchers) shows that they simply shift the timing of purchases. Some retailers raise prices during the holiday, reducing consumer savings. Sales tax holidays create complexities for tax code compliance, efficient labor allocation, and inventory management. However, free advertising for what is effectively...

Anderson: Hunting and fishing TV shows are still changing

Beginning in 1965 and continuing through 1986, “The American Sportsman” was broadcast on ABC, hosted by Curt Gowdy. Gowdy was an outdoorsman and broadcast journalist who stumbled across the show’s concept when ABC sent him to Argentina to fish with world famous angler Joe Brooks. The segment was slotted in an episode of ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.” “The public reaction was so strong a new series was born,” Gowdy, who died in 2006 at the age of 86, later recalled. At its core, “The American Sportsman” was a call to adventure that reflected and validated the interests of its viewers, while also transporting them, vicariously, to places they might never visit. In those respects, the show was a film version of American outdoor storytelling that began around campfires in the 1700s. So much has happened in the centuries since, particularly in the past 50 years, that Gowdy might not recognize the outdoors broadcasting “industry.” Now, as many Minnesotans settle in for a long winter of more “watching” than “doing,” they’ll see changes among hunting and fishing shows. Some hosts are handing their “star” duties to sons or daughters. And more outdoors viewing options than ever are availab...

Juul bought ads appearing on Cartoon Network and other youth sites, suit claims

Juul Labs, the vaping company that has long insisted it never marketed its products to teenagers, purchased ad space in its early days on numerous youth-focused websites, including those of Nickelodeon, the Cartoon Network, Seventeen magazine and educational sites for middle school and high school students, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Massachusetts attorney general. The suit, brought against Juul by the state’s attorney general, Maura Healey, presents some of the starkest evidence to date that the company was targeting young nonsmokers during its launch period, from June 2015 through early 2016. According to the lawsuit, Juul rejected an initial marketing proposal by a marketing firm it had hired, Cult Collective, that would have branded it as a technology company with a target audience of adult smokers. The proposal that was rejected featured images of outdated technology like clunky telephones and joysticks, with a picture of a Juul device and the words, “Smoking Evolved.” Instead, the lawsuit says, Juul dropped the Cult Collective, and hired an in-house interim art director to produce “Vaporized,” the youth-oriented campaign, featuring beautiful models in pr...
